Both teams have just one loss in their last five league games with both sides posting big wins in the previous round of games. Newcastle pulled off a stunning 4-1 win at home to Chelsea while United beat Everton 3-0 at a fiery Goodison Park.

However, the same cannot be said for the club's Champions league fortunes with both teams enduring a tough night in Europe midweek. United surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Galatasaray in Turkey while Newcastle were undone by a 98th minute penalty in Paris to see them draw 1-1 with PSG, with both results leaving two clubs facing an uphill battle to qualify for the knock-out round of the competition.

United have not beaten Newcastle since September 2021 and the two sides are currently separated in the standings by just one point.

Eddie Howe will still be without the likes of Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Matt Targett, Sven Botman, Harvey Barnes, Callum Wilson and Dan Burn, but Sean Longstaff will be assessed ahead of the clash. United will be without Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen while Amad Diallo and Tyrell Malacia are also out, however Marcus Rashford, who was suspended midweek and Antony could be back for the game at St. James Park.

Newcastle are still feeling stung after their midweek Champions League trip to Paris saw them denied the most famous of victories against PSG. Alexander Isak’s first-half strike was canceled out by a Kylian Mbappe penalty with just seconds remaining in controversial circumstances. Eddie Howe will be hoping this injustice fuels his players into a response against Man Utd, but the Magpies are still without a long list of important players including Sven Botman, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Sean Longstaff, Calum Wilson, Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy.

Man Utd’s midweek Champions League exploits were similarly bruising. Despite leading 3-1 against Galatasaray in Istanbul a pair of mistakes from goalkeeper André Onana saw the Red Devils forced to settle for a 3-3 draw that makes their progression to the tournament’s knockout rounds much more unlikely. However, Man Utd are actually on a three-game winning streak in the Premier League and will hope to continue that against a Newcastle side that is seriously depleted.

St James' Park has been a fortress again for Eddie Howe's side this term. No team has won more points at the home in the top flight than the Toon in 2023/24, while the likes of Arsenal, Man City and PSG have all suffered defeat on Teesside in recent months.

VAR denied Newcastle of a famous win away at the Parc des Princes in midweek, but spirits remain high at the North East club despite ongoing injury issues.

Saturday's visitors have got personnel problems of their own and will be happy to shift their focus back to the Premier League after throwing away another lead in their latest manic Champions League tie in midweek.

Without being hugely convincing, the Red Devils have been getting the job done domestically and are the form team in the division with three wins on the bounce.

They're a point and a place above their hosts in sixth ahead of the weekend. The winner of Saturday's game would climb to fifth - and likely stay there, as Spurs travel to Man City on Sunday.

Man United could not blame the officials, meanwhile, as they let a two-goal lead away to Galatasaray slip to put them on the verge of going out too.

Both teams have fared better in domestic matters this term, with this a clash of sixth and seventh that has the Red Devils a point above their opponents ahead of kick-off.

Erik ten Hag's side can boast five wins in their last six in the league and yet this promises to be a far tougher examination, given all of those victories came against sides in the bottom half.

Eddie Howe's substantial injury list does not ease this weekend, with Sean Longstaff still ruled out of action.

However the likes of Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Sven Botman remain at least weeks away from a return. Sandro Tonali, meanwhile, is banned from football until August.

Newcastle could bring Lewis Hall into the mix for fresh legs after Howe left his youthful bench untouched in Paris. Kobbie Mainoo is pushing for another start in the Man United team having returned to the bench in midweek.

Casemiro leads the visitors' absentees, which includes Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Mason Mount. Tyrell Malacia has suffered a setback in training.

The Magpies have one of the best home records in the league, and while the Red Devils are strong on the road domestically they tend not to score often - which will worry them against a very solid defence.

Their best bet is Newcastle are exhausted and impacted by their injuries, something which they've dealt with well in the last couple of games.
